5 Tips on Beating the Blues & Staying positive

June 27, 2017

Life is full obstecules and it's easy to let negative thoughts, struggles, and hardships get you down. Although you can't control what life hands you, however, you can control how you respond and recover.

One of the very first things I started to work on consistantly with my own personal development was to change my attitude and outlook on life. A attitude that would help me not only look at the world in a positive way during the bad days but also stay positive and keep working towards something better.

Here's 5 tips that I've found to be most effective in developing a positive outlook on life.

1. Find the optimistic view point in a a negative situation

In my experience, the simplest way to build a positive outlook on life is to frequently ask helpful questions.

When I'm in a situation where I've made a mistake, failed, or stumbled in any way I'll ask myself these questions:

a. What are the positive outcomes of the situation?
b. What leasons can I learn form this?

Rather than deweling on a negative situation it'll help me to use optomistic thinking.

2. Surround yourself with a positive enviornment

Who you choose to spend your time with and the input you get from the TV, internet and magazines will have a huge effect on your outlook.

To stay positive it's essential to have influences in your life that will have your back and lift you up instead of dragging you down.

For example, ask yourself :

  • Who are the 3 most negative people I spend time with?

  • What are 3 negative activities I engage in?

Try to spend more time with people who have a positve influence on your life.

3. Silence Your Inner Critic

To block the unwanted thoughts from invading your mind you have to first think positive. A little self-criticism can be a reality check that motivates you to be a better person. But there's a vast difference between "I need to work out more," and "I look like a jiggly blob ."

Make the choice to be kind to yourself. Change your "I can't" into "Why the hell not" and give yourself a chance. Relinquise all the insercurities and doubts you have towards yourself.

Latstly, give your inner critic a name, prefrably a silly one so you dont take it seriously. Look them in the eye and you tell them "Have several seats!"

4. Focus on the Good Things In Your Life

Focusing your attention on the good things in life is one of the best ways I have found to appricaite what I have, to find confort and happiness in my souroundings, and value the small grace of joys we tend to overlook .

Here's some ideas:

  • Write down 5 things that you enjoy doing

  • Keep in your calender all the fun things you've done and plan to do this month.

  • Pick 3 people who make you happy and give one a call

5.  Meditation

Now most of you might be thinking, "Meditation?....really Kelsey?". But believe it or not meditation can help eliminate negative thoughts, fears, anxiety, all factors that can prevent us from being truly happy. Meditation gives me a freeing and powerful feeling. Its can help take control of your mind to refocus on the positive things in life. I promise it will leave you with a sense of refreshment and ready to take on any obstacles that may confront you.

Never tried it, start here:

  • Take deep breathes

  • Relax your body

  • Clear your mind by focusing on one thought

Take a few minutes out your day to practice these steps towards
